Compound nouns are formed naturally by combining two or more nouns (mail + man). Yet, the two parts also function on their own. The first part tells us what kind of object, person, or what its purpose is. The second part identifies the first part. Compound nouns always have a meaning that is different, usually more specific, than the two separate words.
